There is no question that living with a disability is difficult. It is! Really, really difficult! It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, fall into a “why even bother” mode and bow to the limitations that your disability presents. We get it! Sometimes, it’s just plain easier to throw in the towel…to simply stop caring.
One of my favorite quotes of all time comes from the incomparable Dr. Seuss, via The Lorax…
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
You need to care, because caring is the very first step towards real change. And remember, real change starts with you! You need to come to understand and value your unique characteristics and offerings, and then (this is the important part), muster the courage to share them with the world.
Is this a quick and easy process? Certainly not! One could argue it is an evolving, lifelong process. And often times the only way to truly see our strengths is to first experience hardship. Life is a series of trials and triumphs – it’s how we respond to them that truly makes or breaks us.
I want you to know that I believe in you. I wouldn’t be here writing this if I didn’t. I believe that you have a great deal to offer this world and I want you to see it too!
So, here it is, the first day of the rest of your life. How are you going to spend the day?
