Three Questions to Inspire Happiness

Who am I?

This is a loaded question no doubt, but before we can even hope to improve our outlook, we must become intimately aware of every nook and cranny of our being.  We must come to fully understand ourselves so that we may come to understand our actions and feelings.

While I hesitate to go so far as to say our actions define us, our feelings and our reaction to those feelings most certainly do.

How many times have you had your feelings hurt by either a well intentioned or just plain nasty person?  My guess…too many to count!  Here’s the thing though, it’s not what was said about, or done to you that matters, but how you reacted to it.

Did you wallow and dwell on the hurt or did you brush it off and move on?  Did you absorb the words or action into your being and allow them to define you?

Let’s face it, sometimes there is some truth behind hurtful words and actions, and sometimes there’s not.  If there is truth, you need to acknowledge that, accept it and move on.  If there is no basis for what was said or done, then there is no reason for you to waste your time thinking about it.

To do so is hard, no question! But in the end you must remember that only you define you.  You decide who you are and who you want to become.  No one in this world knows you better than yourself, so why would you ever allow another person’s words or actions to define you?

Who do I want to be?

I’m not talking about what you want to be, rather what kind of person you aspire to be.

Do you want to be confident?  Do you want to be positive? Inspiring? Successful?

We all want those things, but very few of us put the time and energy into getting there.  We are creatures of habit and routine.  We fall into a caricature of ourselves – an idea of who we were, who we are, and who we will therefore become.  This definitive thinking is limiting.  We cannot, and certainly will not, break the proverbial mold with this line of thinking.

The wonderful thing about human beings is that we are adaptable, we are moldable, we are capable of change!  We have survived for millenia due to our ability to evolve!  We must harness this natural survival instinct and apply it to our everyday lives.  We must not sit comfortably in our wretched, old thoughts for too long.  We must strive for a hint of discomfort if we hope to grow beyond ourselves.

What makes me happy, really, truly happy?


When is the last time you radiated happiness?  I’m talking about the kind of happiness that brightens an entire room!  You are so happy that your heart is nearly bouncing out of your chest with each purposeful and determined step you take.  Your happiness is infectious!  Think back… Now, hold onto that memory for a moment.

Life has a way of sucking this radiance out of us without us even realizing it.  We slip into a state of unconscious contentedness; we become slaves to our obligations, our mistakes and hardships, our unspoken fears.  We begin to float along, simply existing, forgetting to recognize and soak in the unintentionally beautiful moments of life.

We must take time to experience, to really feel these beautiful moments.  We must start a mental log of these moments.  We must collect them in our soul.  We must allow them to radiate through our very being so that we can feel every ounce of their warmth and potential.

Ok, do you still have that memory of your radiating happiness?  You must find that feeling again!  It may not take on the exact same form.  It may come at the most unexpected of times.  But, you must always be open to feeling it, truly experiencing it when it does come.
