A New Year’s Resolution You’ll Keep

Every New Year’s Eve we struggle with the same old New Year’s resolutions to better ourselves and most of us will fail. This is because we pick things that are difficult or things we just don’t want to do. We have good intentions, but life always gets in the way.

Let’s break the mold. Why must we do the same thing year after year? A New Year is coming so why not do something a little different for the New Year and put a positive spin on life, your life and the lives of those around you.

I have a list of activities and alternatives to the typical New Year’s resolutions. Hopefully with these ideas you can make a difference within yourself and in the lives of others all at the same time.

Let’s start:

Find what you are good at or like to do in life, and find a way to incorporate it into your life more.

Finding a hobby you like or possibly doing some volunteering using a skill you have obtained or would like to obtain. This gives you incentive to keep doing the activity and you will be helping others at the same time.

Greater self-esteem, joy of life, and a sense of accomplishment are some of the rewards you can expect to reap doing this one simple alternative to a typical new year’s resolution.

Find something (even if it is small) that is nice to do for someone and pay-it-forward.

How great a place the world would be if we all took this simple task to heart. Open a door for someone, say hello, and keep others in your mind and heart. You never know what might happen, a special someone might see how positive and nice you are and get to know you better.

Find a way to make your personal environment better and then do the same for someone less fortunate to make their life better.

This doesn’t have to be a stranger, start by helping your friends or family with words of encouragement, or do some tasks for them so they have time to work on achieving their goals.

An example is to help with home repairs or lawn work that would allow someone to stay in their current housing.

Get creative and incorporate things you like to do, or are good at when you pick the task, and the time will pass while making new friends and acquaintances along the way.

The help you give to others, in any way possible, will make you a better person and allow someone to be happy in the situation life has given them.

Look at your relationships and find what you can do to make them better.

Take your insufficiencies and turn them into a positive.

This means you need to not only look inward, but also outward. Really examine your relationships and try to make them better. Get to know your friends all over again and don’t take them for granted. Keep in touch with those you know and find activities to do together, they may bring new people into the mix and you may find more new friends along the way.

Think of ways to better yourself when you look inward. Talk to your friends and see if there are things that you can better about yourself and use the suggestions to make yourself a new person. Don’t forget to still be an individual and keep the things that make you the person you are and remember, no person is perfect.

Look for injustices in the world and see what you can do about them by using your skills or interests to start the change the world needs.

When dealing with life’s injustices it is easy to get down or feel as though you have run into a brick wall. Try to keep a positive attitude and keep up the good fight.

Talk things through with people and try to put yourself in another person’s shoes as much as possible. If for no other reason as to know what counter arguments someone is going to use if you are trying to change their perspective.

The world is not perfect, as we as humans are not perfect. Pick something about the world or your current environment that does not seem right or just. Pick something that is almost like a pet peeve of yours or something you really believe in. Picking something that you feel strongly about will help you stay with the cause.

Use what makes you the person you are, your skills and abilities, and your likes instead of dislikes to start the change you feel the world needs. This doesn’t mean you have to be a super human person. Little things (such as using writing skills or your ability to make connections and be amiable while advocating for a cause) can make the world a better place and the time commitment doesn’t have to be great. Get others involved in your cause. The more people involved the more likely you are to succeed.

List all the events you can think of that you would enjoy doing and can realistically do or get to, then make plans ahead of time to enjoy life.

You should always live in the here-and-now, but planning something great in your life can give you a reason to continue on if life isn’t going your way or you are just in the dumps. Plan activities such as going to events or locations that for whatever reason make you happy.

These plans can keep you going and by making them a realistic goal you will make sure you will be able to see them through, which will keep you from being let down if you were not able to make the event.

Try for as many of these as possible, but do not let them get you down if you are unable to do some of them. If you feel strongly about one of them do just the one. Whatever you do, remember to keep a positive attitude and enjoy life.

This year, make a New Year’s resolution to make an alternative to the old and mundane. If you don’t do it for yourself, do it for someone else who may need you more than you know.
