Ever Wonder Why Most Bills in Congress Don’t Become Laws?

There are two main reasons. First, the legislative process is slow, just as the framers of the Constitution intended. The framers believed that a slow-moving legislature would be less able to infringe on citizens’ rights and liberties. So, not only is it not designed for quick action, it’s actually structured to slow things down so that matters of national importance can get a careful look. The second reason is that your legislators are waiting to hear from you.

Time constraints of congressional sessions coupled with the thousands of pieces of legislation that get proposed each year, usually result in congress members only paying attention to popular Bills. How do they know which Bills are popular? They know because you, their constituents ring them up, email them or tag them on their social media posts. So, if they don’t hear from you, then chances are the Bills that you would like to see get passed, get ignored instead.

Don’t Be Shy!

Lastly, but most importantly, contact your state representatives so that they pay attention to issues and bills that are important to you. Not sure on what to say? See our guide: 7 Tips For Effective Communication With Your Lawmakers
